What do I do When the Vacuum Brush Roll is Not Working?

There can be two possible causes for which your vacuum brush roll is not working, it can be dirty, or the second option is broken. If it is dirty, then it is easy to clean and get it up and running again; if the vacuum brush is broken, get it replace by yourself. Let’s start by looking at the most common problems and how to fix them.

Option 1-Cleaning

If your vacuum brush rolls get jammed up, especially with hair, it can be clogged, so it stops spinning and results in a loss. When we clean the brush regularly, it doesn’t happen. To clean your vacuum cleaner, set aside twenty minutes to complete the task thoroughly.

Find a Right Place

To start cleaning, find a place that you do not mind if dirt, dust, and other grime fall onto it, or you can cover the area with a dirty sheet or newspaper. Lay the vacuum on its back or side so that you have access to the bottom of your vacuum cleaner, where the vacuum brush roll is.

Check the Brush Roll and Belt

Take help from the instruction manual on how to remove the brush roller. To gain access to the burhs roller, first, you need to remove the access plate located on the bottom of the vacuum. You will usually require a screwdriver for this.

Remove Hair and Build up Dirt

Once you have the brush roller off of your vacuum cleaner, you can start to clean it. Now try and untangle the hair tangle with your hands, cutting away the hair and sting when needed. Once you have removed the large debris, you can deal with the smaller stuff. Use a damp sponge or brush to clean the roller and bristles fully.

Option 2-Fixing your Brush Roll

If your vacuum doesn’t work even after cleaning it, it is time to fix it. You may have noticed a broken part while you were cleaning. If you did, then that is the part which you need to replace or repair.

Before you begin, find a place where you can fix your vacuum cleaner without worrying about dirt falling onto a surface. You should also find a flat surface to work on.

Unplug Vacuum Cleaner from the Power Source

Remove the vacuum brush roll and make a visual inspection. There are typically two issues you may find with the brush roll itself:

  • Worn brush strips
  • Brush roll bearing wear/ damage

Get Brush Roll Replacement

If the bristles on the brush strips are visibly worn or damaged, then you might be able to just replace the brush strips on the brush roll.

For the brush roll to spin properly, the bearings at either end of the brush roll should be intact and working. To check this, turn it with your hand in while the brush roll is hard to rotate or poorly aligned then the bearings or spindles on the end of the brush roll may be damaged or broken. In this event, a new brush roll will be required.

Brush Roll Drive Belt Replacement

When the brush roll is removed, then look at its belt. This belt turns to spin the roller. You may be able to see where the belt has come off of where it should be. Take the time to replace the belt where it should go. Reassemble the vacuum and see if that fixes the problem.

If the belt is broken, you can easily find a replacement if you know your vacuum model. Buy two or more for further use as well.

Remove the brush roll and find where the belt goes. Remove the old and broken belt and replace it with the new belt.

Still, Brush Roll is Not Working?

If all these solutions don’t fix the problem, then take your vacuum to any professional. Fixing the problem by yourself will save you from taking your vacuum cleaner somewhere else and will likely save you money on repairs, but there may come a time when you cannot figure out the problem by yourself.

Bottom Line

Vacuum is an everyday use appliance, and it becomes difficult when it suddenly stops working. To keep your vacuum intact, it is necessary to clean it every day.
